GETTING IN GEAR FOR YOUR JOB SEARCH
I recently participated in a webinar on job search techniques for The Ladders.com, a fantastic premier job search site, with which I have recently partnered. I wanted to share with you some of the key points, which may be particularly helpful if you are in job search mode.
With businesses closing, high unemployment and the average tenure for senior executives continuing to drop, the competition is fierce. The job search process has become increasingly complex.
This means job seekers have to be at the top of their game, thinking out of the box about how to get a job, and what kind of job they are willing to pursue. A high level of energy, organization, focus and commitment to the search, is required in these challenging times.
So, how can you kick your job search into high gear and guarantee a smooth ride?
KEY TECHNIQUES OF SUCCESSFUL JOB SEEKERS
Drive – learn the ways to network and market ones self
A Great Pit Crew – create a personal circle of business associates who have been chosen based on their backgrounds and ability to offer constructive feedback. Perhaps form a job search group
Career Coach – consider retaining a coach. I know I found this invaluable when I transitioned from corporate p.r. and human resources into a new career
Improve job search skills – Those most successful with their job searches focus on the gaps in their job search game — whether it be improving their resume, their job market savvy, negotiating, interviewing, and honestly appraising their strengths and weaknesses
SECRETS TO A FAST START
Commit the Time-35-40 hours a week on search, combining direct contact, networking, online research, and recruiter outreach
Check Under Your Hood — Self Assessment – Begin the self-assessment phase immediately. Focus on your values, the culture you want to be a part of, your job satisfiers and dissatisfiers, know your strengths and weaknesses
Don’t make mistakes choosing any job. Don’t choose from fear
Let People Know – Let all of your allies and ex-bosses know your situation as soon as possible
Talk to Your Advisors – Bounce ideas off of your close network of trusted colleagues
Set up a home office limiting its use for business; create a private business line and private email to limit distractions
Consider freelance or contract work as a way in to an organization. But date before marrying – make sure the fit is right!
