Decisions, Decisions

DecisionsIn this fast-paced and abundant world, there are so many choices to make, so many decisions.
From the simple to the complex, seemingly trivial to life-altering — to take on this project or that project, this job or that, buy a home or rent, lunch with this person or that person, go here for vacation or there, work out or take a walk – some times we can find ourselves overwhelmed by the choices in front of us. We are asked to weigh the opportunity cost of every decision we make.

How do we know that we are making the right choice (or at least, the better one)?

In the past week alone, I have had to make decisions relating to career, health, friendships, scheduling, resources, financing, and marketing. What decisions have you been faced with?

Making decisions gives us a great opportunity to think about our values, goals, likes and dislikes. Every decision we make provides us with insight into who we are being at any moment, and to see the choices that every moment presents us.

When considering two choices, try this process, courtesy of my coaching school, the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching.

Decide the pain and the gain of each choice, after you go through that process ask yourself “What do you make of this? What do you see?” Based on weighing the pain and gain, make your choice.
After you make your choice, seek to reduce the pain of your choice, and increase the gain (try to shift some of the gains you would have received from the choice you did not make to the choice you have made).

A great, easy-to-use, powerful process
